Asian Trade Rug Company has been a source for area rugs Tucson can rely on since 1978, and our 4,000 square foot showroom is one of the largest collections of hand-knotted rugs in Southern Arizona.

Inside, you’ll find thousands of pieces spanning modern, vintage, and antique styles, all sourced through direct relationships with artisans and traders around the world. Our team takes the time to understand your style, your budget, and how the rug will actually live in your home before making a recommendation. We believe buying a rug should feel like a conversation, not a transaction…so come by and let us show you what’s possible.

Yes, and we’d actually recommend one with almost every rug purchase.

A rug pad helps keep your rug from slipping and bunching, while also adding cushioning and reducing the friction between the rug and the floor. That extra layer can help protect your rug and extend its life.

We carry rug pads in a variety of sizes, thicknesses, and materials. The right one depends on your rug and what type of flooring you have, whether that’s hardwood, tile, carpet, or something else.

There isn’t a single right rug for every room, but a few simple guidelines can help you choose the best area rugs Tucson homes call for.

For size, a good rule of thumb in a living room is to leave about 12–18 inches of bare floor between the rug and the walls. Ideally, at least the front legs of your furniture should sit on the rug so the room feels connected rather than pieced together.

The best type of rug also depends on how you use the space. Busy areas like entryways and living rooms may benefit from a durable, tightly woven rug, while a bedroom or quieter sitting area might be a good place for something softer like a Gabbeh or something lighter and more textured like a Kilim.

And then there’s the fun part: color and pattern. Think about what you already have in the room, but don’t be afraid to try something unexpected.

If you’re shopping in person, bring photos of your space and, if possible, your room measurements. We can help you compare different sizes and styles and see what works best.

Yes! Oriental rugs have been at the heart of what we do for decades, and they’re a big part of the area rugs Tucson shoppers find in our showroom. Our Tucson showroom carries a large selection of Oriental rugs, including Persian, Turkish, and tribal rugs.

Each hand-knotted rug has its own character. You’ll see differences in the patterns, colors, weaving techniques, materials, and the region where the rug was made. If you’re not familiar with those differences, don’t worry. That’s where we can help.

We’ll walk you through what you’re looking at, answer your questions, and help you find something that feels right for your home and your budget. There’s no need to be an expert before you walk through our doors.

This is a question we hear often, and there’s no single answer. Persian and Turkish rugs each have their own weaving traditions, patterns, and regional characteristics.

Persian rugs traditionally come from Iran and are often known for intricate designs, detailed patterns, and rich, varied colors. Turkish rugs tend to have bolder, more geometric designs and are traditionally made using a double-knot weaving technique.

Of course, there are plenty of exceptions, and that’s part of what makes these rugs so interesting. Two rugs can come from the same general region and still look completely different.

It’s much easier to understand the difference when you can see the rugs in person. Our team can pull out examples and talk you through the details so you can compare them side by side.

Unlike a traditional hand-knotted rug, a Kilim is flat-woven, so it doesn’t have the raised pile you find on most knotted rugs. The result is a thinner rug with a more casual, textured feel.

Kilim rugs have been woven for centuries by communities throughout the Middle East and Central Asia. Traditionally, they weren’t just used as floor coverings and could also serve as blankets, tent dividers, and other household pieces. That history is part of what gives them their distinctive character!

Kilims are a great option if you like bold patterns and handmade texture but want something lighter and easier to layer. They can look just as at home over hardwood or tile as they do layered with another rug.

Gabbeh rugs are easy to recognize once you’ve seen one. They’re typically thick and plush, with simple, abstract patterns and a soft feel underfoot.

Traditionally woven by nomadic communities in the Zagros Mountains of Iran, Gabbehs tend to have a more relaxed look than highly detailed Persian rugs. Their simple designs and rich textures make them especially popular in contemporary homes where you want to add warmth without adding a lot of pattern.

Because they’re handmade, you’ll also see small variations from rug to rug. Those little differences are part of the charm…no two Gabbehs are exactly alike!
